Top 5 Typing Test Websites to Improve Your Typing Speed in 2023

Now, below you will find some of the top typing test websites on the internet that can help you to increase your typing speed and prepare you to type without even looking down at your keyboard.

However, before I proceed further, it is worth mentioning that typing is like any other life skill that can improve only if you practice hard enough.

Opening the typing test websites listed below will not make you a fast typist instantly or overnight. Much like other skills that you have acquired over the years, learning fast typing or touch-typing requires daily practice.

Hence, if you want to truly increase your typing speed and get an edge over your colleagues or friends, I’d recommend you choose your preferred website from the list below, bookmark it in your browser, and practice your typing for at least 10 minutes a day.

Although you won’t see the result right away, believe me when I say that practice will make you better each day, even if you do not realize it.

So, with that said, let’s take a look at some of the best typing test websites to improve your typing speed right below.

1) TypeTest.io

Type Test

Starting with one of the most popular typing test websites out there, TypeTest.io is a simple typing test site that can help you analyze your typing and increase the speed drastically.

It was the first typing test website that I tried out when I ventured into the world of mechanical keyboards and typing, and it continues to remain one of my favorite typing test websites.

The thing about TypeTest.io is that it is very simple to use and it provides a lot of data about your typing for you to analyze and improve, considering you sign up on the platform. These include your word-per-minute (WPM) count, accuracy percentage, and the number of words you typed correctly in each test.

Furthermore, you will get your entire typing history along with a graphical representation of your typing tests compared to previous ones.

However, one thing that I personally do not like about TypeTest.io is the fact that if you type a character wrong during a test, it marks the entire word as incorrect and colors it red. For me, it is a bit distracting and discouraging while taking a typing test.

2) Monkeytype

Monkey Type

Monkeytype is undoubtedly one of the best typing test websites that I have used. In fact, when I discovered Monkeytype, I stopped using TypeTest.io and shifted to the latter for its simplicity and minimalistic UI.

It was started by a Redditor named u/Miodec three years ago when the user shared a prototype of the website on the r/MechanicalKeyboards subreddit, which is considered the go-to place for keyboard enthusiasts and typists.

Now, the specialty of Monkeytype is that instead of typing the words in a dedicated text field like in regular typing tests websites, users can type the words over their pre-written counterparts.

This method allowed for a much better typing experience than other typing test websites at the time, and hence, Monkeytype became an instant hit.

Today, Monkeytype has become one of the most popular typing test websites online, supporting over 40 languages and offering unique features like a custom typing mode, a Zen Mode, and many others. It also offers the usual timer feature with the default pre-set timers ranging from 15 seconds to 120 seconds.

Moreover, much like TypeTest.io, you will get your typing data to analyze your performance and improve it over time.

3) Type.Biz

Now, the third one on the list would be Type.Biz, which is another popular typing test website in the market. Type.Biz is very similar to Monkeytype and uses the same typing UI in which users have to type over the pre-written words on the platform.

However, unlike in Monkeytype, you will get an on-screen keyboard during your tests that will show your typing in real time.

Now, the on-screen keyboard animation is both a boon and a curse, in my opinion. The plus side is that you will be able to see your key presses on the keyboard while taking your typing tests.

On the contrary, it becomes a huge distraction during tests that can negatively affect your typing speed. Unfortunately, there is no way to disable it.

On the positive side, you will get all the features of Monkeytype in Type.Biz, including the usual timer mode and the unique custom and Zen modes.

The default pre-set timers are also similar to Monkeytype and range from 15 seconds to 120 seconds. And you also get all your typing data in a comprehensive manner to analyze and improve your typing speed and performance.

4) TypeFast.io

Type fast

Now, TypeFast.io is a lesser-known typing test website that has a unique UI, which is very different from any other typing test websites that we have covered so far.

Instead of following the usual test-in-a-box UI or the Monkeytype-style overlay text UI for the tests, TypeFast.io features a unique horizontal-scrolling UI for the typing tests.

Although it might be a distracting UI design for a typing test website, I must say that it is a completely out-of-the-box typing test website that could drastically increase typing speed if you get the hang of it.

Other than the unique horizontal-scrolling feature, TypeFast.io allows users to adjust the pre-set timer. While the lowest timer you can set is a 1-second timer, there is no limit for the highest timer, which I feel is pretty useless. I mean, who would type for 226 hours (screenshot below)? I am sure I won’t.

However, if you are someone who likes the horizontal-scrolling design and the minimalistic features of TypeFast.io, you can surely use it to practice your typing and hopefully, improve your typing speed.

5) Typing Club

Now, coming to the last typing test website to improve your speed on this list, the Typing Club is essentially a typing-learning website rather than a typing test website.

On this platform, you will be able to learn the basics of typing and gradually move on to advanced typing tricks and techniques that would help increase your speed and accuracy drastically.

Typing Club is designed as a full-fledged course to help users learn typing entirely from scratch. Once you go to the website, you will be offered dedicated modules, with video descriptions and practical tests, to learn basic and advanced typing.

If you have used the Duolingo app, which is a language-learning app, on your mobile device, you will notice that the Typing Club website follows a similar course-based structure to help you learn typing.

There are a total of 685 courses in Typing Club, and much like in Duolingo, you need to complete a test first before you can unlock the next one. Hence, using Typing Club is more like a game where you unlock the next level by completing the previous one.

This is, in my opinion, one of the best ways to learn the basics of typing, especially touch-typing in which you don’t see the keyboard while typing at all.

Bonus Typing Test Website!

Oh, you thought I am done? Well, you read this article till this point and for that, I want to thank you by telling you about one of my favorite typing test websites. The website that I am talking about is ZType.

Now, ZType is not a typing test website, per se, but a typing game. Yes, you read that right! It is a game for keyboard nerds who like to test their typing skills while enjoying a retro, arcade-style video game. In the game, you play as a bullet-firing UFO floating in space and the words come as enemy rockets that fall down from above the screen.

Once you see the word, start typing them one by one to destroy each of them before they reach your ship. It is like the uber-popular video game Space Invader and features similar UI designs.

Hence, if you are looking for a fun typing test website in which you will be able to test your typing speed while destroying spaceships, ZType is the way to go. And the best part is that it is completely free to play and you do not even need an account to try it out right now.

And while we are on the topic of pricing, let me tell you that every website that I have listed in this article is completely free to use. Although the Typing Club website has an optional subscription for school students, the typing course is free for all.

Wrapping Up

So, these are the top typing test websites that you can use to drastically improve your typing speed and performance. However, as aforementioned, you must practice your typing every day to see the results, and I can assure you that you will improve over time.

When I started out, I had an average WPM count of 45 words. Now, after around a month of practice, my average has increased to around 85 WPM. My highest WPM count to date is 99 WPM with 100% accuracy.

Hence, if you also want to increase your typing speed and get your tasks done more quickly than ever, try out the websites listed above.

Also, let us know which one of them you like the most and why in the comments below. As always, I will see you at the next one!
